Why Rhodes?
Rhodes is one of Israelis' favourite islands, and for good reason: the flight from Tel Aviv is one of the shortest to Greece, and the island has it all – a medieval old town, beaches for every taste, villages and ancient sites. **Rhodes Old Town** is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Europe's best-preserved medieval towns. It also holds Jewish heritage: the Jewish quarter and Greece's oldest synagogue.
How to get to Rhodes
There are **direct flights from Tel Aviv** to Rhodes, mostly in season, plus a seasonal route from Haifa. Who flies and when: flights to Rhodes guide. Fares update every morning on the flights page. There are also ferries from Piraeus (link above), but the crossing is long.
Top things to do in Rhodes

- The Jewish quarter, Kahal Shalom synagogue (1577) and the Square of the Jewish Martyrs.
- The Acropolis of Lindos: the sanctuary of Athena Lindia on the cliff, with sea views, and the white village below.
- St Paul's Bay near Lindos: clear, calm water.
- The Acropolis of Rhodes on Monte Smith: Hellenistic temples, theatre and stadium.
- The Valley of the Butterflies: thousands of moths gather there in summer, with shaded paths.
- Prasonisi at the southern tip: the island's top windsurfing and kitesurfing beach.
- A day trip to neighbouring Symi, with colourful neoclassical houses.
The Jewish quarter and Kahal Shalom
The Jewish quarter, **La Juderia**, is in the eastern part of the Old Town. **Kahal Shalom** synagogue, from 1577, is the oldest synagogue in Greece, and the Jewish Museum of Rhodes is in the same complex. Entry is €6; it is closed on Saturday and on Jewish and Greek holidays. On 23 July 1944 the Jews of Rhodes and Kos were deported to Auschwitz; the memorial in the **Square of the Jewish Martyrs** honours the 1,604 victims. Hours, prices and full history: Chabad of Rhodes and the Jewish quarter.
When is the best time to visit Rhodes?
The main season is May to October, which is also when there are the most direct flights. June and September are especially good: warm sea, with fewer crowds and less heat than July and August. In winter flights are less frequent and some hotels and restaurants close. Live weather is at the top of this page.
Getting around Rhodes
Buses run from Rhodes town to Lindos and the main beaches, but for the south, villages and quieter beaches a rental car is best. Before you book, read our guide to renting a car in Greece.
Shabbat & kosher in Rhodes
**Chabad of Rhodes** is in Ialysos, at Leof. Iraklidon 84, outside Rhodes town and not in the Old Town. It has prayers, Shabbat meals by registration, Shabbat packages for hotels (order by Thursday evening) and the kosher **Jerusalem** restaurant. Chabad warns that many tavernas on the island falsely claim to be kosher. There is no eruv in Rhodes. All details: Chabad of Rhodes.
