It is recommended to check opening hours in advance, particularly outside the summer season, as regular services take place mainly during the warmer months when visitors and descendants return to the island.
History and Architecture
The Kahal Shalom Synagogue, situated in La Juderia, the Jewish quarter of Rhodes, is the oldest operating synagogue in Greece, having been completed in 1577. The building reflects typical Sephardic and Ottoman architectural styles, featuring a central bimah, mosaic flooring made from local black and white stones, and two Torah arks located on either side of the courtyard entrance.
The Jewish Museum and Present Day
The synagogue complex also contains the Jewish Museum of Rhodes, which preserves the history of the local Jewish community. Memorial plaques in Ladino, Hebrew, and French adorn the interior and exterior to honor community members and those lost in the Holocaust. With a very small permanent Jewish population remaining on the island today, religious services are primarily held during the summer months to accommodate visitors and Jewish descendants from Rhodes.
