What are Kalamata & Messinia like?
Kalamata is the capital of Messinia in the southwestern Peloponnese, between Mount Taygetos and the Messinian Gulf. The city has a long urban beach, an old town with a castle and market, and the feel of a real Greek city. Around it lies one of Greece's loveliest regions: long beaches, Venetian castles, ancient sites and olive groves, with the wild Mani peninsula to the south.
When is the best time to visit Kalamata?
May to October for a beach holiday. Spring and autumn are good for sites and Mani. In summer the city hosts an international dance festival. The olive harvest begins in autumn.
