Historic Passenger Growth in Northern Greece
Greek City Times reports that Thessaloniki Airport is on track to set a new historic passenger record, potentially surpassing 8.2 million travelers this year. The projection was announced by George Velos, Director of Development at Fraport Greece, during a tourism celebration event at the airport.
Velos noted that markets served by the airport are steadily increasing their share. Looking ahead to the winter schedule, he confirmed that a recently established air connection with Haifa will maintain its operations throughout the winter season, alongside other international routes.
Celebrating Mount Olympus and Gastronomy
The airport event marked World Tourism Day for the fourth consecutive year, focusing on the nearby Mount Olympus, which recently earned recognition on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a site of mixed cultural and natural value.
Passengers in the departures hall sampled regional foods and beverages infused with herbs from the mountain. Officials emphasized that Mount Olympus sits just one hundred kilometres from Thessaloniki, offering visitors easy access to major regional attractions within roughly an hour from the airport.
Regional Promotion and Infrastructure
Local municipal and regional representatives highlighted the city's comparative advantages, ranging from historical monuments to rich culinary traditions. Thessaloniki, a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network for gastronomy, continues to launch international promotional campaigns to boost visitor numbers and support the local economy year-round.
