Growth in Arrivals and Receipts

Greece's tourism industry continues its strong performance, welcoming 28.5 million inbound travelers in the first eight months of 2026, according to provisional data released by the Bank of Greece. This represents a 10 percent increase compared to the same period in 2025.

Travel receipts for the January-August period reached 18.2 billion euros, marking a 9.4 percent rise from a year earlier. In August alone, arrivals climbed to 8.47 million, a 13.4 percent increase year-on-year.

Road Border Crossings Outpace Airports

The surge in travel was particularly noticeable at Greece's land borders. During the eight-month period, arrivals through road border crossings grew by 22.6 percent, compared to a 5.7 percent increase through airports.

In August, the trend intensified as road arrivals jumped 32.2 percent, while airport arrivals rose by 4.9 percent. EU-27 countries contributed significantly to the totals, accounting for 16.97 million visitors.

Performance Across Key Source Markets

Germany remained the largest source market with 4.21 million arrivals between January and August, up 8.1 percent. The United Kingdom followed with 3.40 million arrivals, representing a 3.9 percent increase.

Italy showed the strongest growth among major markets, with arrivals surging 22.1 percent to 1.92 million and receipts climbing 31.7 percent to 1.26 billion euros. France saw a 5.4 percent decline in arrivals to 1.35 million.

Meanwhile, the United States recorded a 1.5 percent drop in arrivals to 1.06 million, yet receipts from US visitors jumped 21 percent to reach 1.47 billion euros.
