Official figures show a notable decrease in traffic fatalities across Greece, as the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport pushes for stricter regulations and better public transport.
- Greece recorded 62 fewer road deaths in the first eight months of 2026.
- New legislation introduces cameras for driving tests and stricter rules for electric scooters.
- Improvements continue across major national highways and public transport networks.
If you plan to rent a car or drive during your trip to Greece, stay mindful of local traffic laws and speed limits. Note that electric scooter regulations are strictly enforced, prohibiting riders under 17 and requiring proper insurance.
Improvement in Road Safety Statistics
Greece has registered a positive trend in traffic safety, recording 62 fewer road fatalities during the first eight months of 2026 compared to the same period last year.
Deputy Infrastructure and Transport Minister Giorgos Kotsiras highlighted the figures during a road safety conference in Attica, emphasizing that the government remains committed to reducing accidents through enhanced enforcement, education, and modern infrastructure.
Reforms in Driving Tests and Regulations
As part of ongoing efforts to elevate driver training standards, the government is preparing legislation to introduce cameras during practical driving examinations to ensure complete transparency.
Additionally, newly implemented rules for electric scooters set a minimum age requirement of 17, mandate insurance, and restrict their operation on roads where speed limits exceed 50 kilometers per hour.
Upgrades to Public Transport and Infrastructure
The ministry stressed the importance of reliable public transport alternatives, pointing to the expansion of 24-hour Saturday services, fleet renewals in Athens and Thessaloniki, and modernized trains on the Athens Metro.
Infrastructure improvements also continue across key national road networks, including the Patras-Pyrgos motorway, the Northern Road Axis of Crete, and the E65 highway, all aimed at fostering safer travel conditions nationwide.
