Car Fire and Explosions in Central Athens

On Wednesday afternoon (September 30), emergency services in Athens responded to a vehicle fire inside a covered parking garage on Garibaldi Street, located right next to Philopappos Hill and close to the Acropolis. The fire broke out in a hybrid car parked inside the facility.

According to residents in the neighborhood, the fire was first noticed at around 12:10 PM when battery explosions began to sound from the vehicle. The flames generated a massive column of thick smoke that could be seen from afar, reaching as far as the Panathenaic Stadium.

Quick Response Prevents Further Damage

Fearing that the fire might spread to the residential property located directly above the indoor garage, a strong force of 12 firefighters and five vehicles rushed to the scene.

Fire crews managed to bring the blaze under control by approximately 1:30 PM. The vehicle was completely destroyed, and minor damage was reported to the parking structure and the building facade, but authorities confirmed no injuries resulted from the incident.
