Introduction to the Athens Riviera

The Athens Riviera is the coastal zone located in the southern suburbs of the Greek capital. Stretching from Piraeus to the southernmost points of Attica at Sounio and Lavrio, the area lies about 16 kilometres from downtown Athens.

Key Areas and Neighbourhoods

According to the Greek National Tourism Organisation, the Riviera encompasses several distinct locations such as the Bay of Zea, Elliniko, Glyfada, Voula, Vouliagmeni, Lagonisi, Varkiza, Anavyssos, and Sounio. Glyfada stands out as a vibrant district filled with upscale restaurants, shops, and leisure venues.

History and Ancient Heritage

Alongside contemporary growth, the Riviera holds deep historical roots. The Temple of Poseidon at Sounio, perched high above the sea, remains a major monument from the Golden Age of Athens. Piraeus also boasts a long history as a strategic naval and commercial harbour dating back to antiquity.

Development and Regeneration

Substantial investments are currently transforming the former Ellinikon International Airport site. Projects include the Ellinikon Metropolitan Park and the Riviera Tower, which is set to become the tallest building in Greece. These regeneration efforts continue to draw significant attention from international estate agents and investors.

Climate and Accessibility

The coastal strip enjoys a mild climate year-round. Visitors and residents can easily access the Riviera from central Athens using available tram lines and bus routes connecting the city centre directly to the southern coast.
