  • Opening hours vary, and visitors are advised to check official updates before traveling.
What it means for you

If you are planning a trip to Santorini, you can now include a visit to the Akrotiri archaeological site on the island's southwestern coast. Check the official Ephorate of Antiquities of Cyclades website for up-to-date opening hours before heading out.

Return of Visitors to Akrotiri

Akrotiri, the Bronze Age city on Santorini buried by a volcanic eruption more than 3,600 years ago, is welcoming visitors again following the earthquake sequence that affected the Cyclades in early 2025. The site resumed operations after meeting strict safety regulations and receiving clearance from Greece's Technical Chamber.

Preservation of a Prehistoric Town

Often referred to as the Minoan Pompeii, the prehistoric town preserves multi-storey houses, paved streets, and wall paintings beneath volcanic ash. A large protective shelter covers approximately three acres of the excavated area, allowing visitors to walk along designated pathways above the ancient ruins.

Planning Your Visit

Opening hours at the site vary depending on the day of the week and the time of year. Travelers should consult the Ephorate's official schedule before planning their trip, as access times can occasionally change at short notice.
