You asked: Where do you get the VAT refund at Athens airport – before or after security?
A question readers sent us on Facebook. Short answer: get the customs stamp before check-in, and collect the money after security.
- Stamp: at the customs office opposite check-in counter 61, before check-in and bag drop.
- Money: at ONExchange desks on the Departures level, after security.
- Flying via another EU country? You get the stamp only there, in the last EU country.
You don't need to come back out of security to get your money. Just don't drop your bag before you've been to customs.
The question
"I bought things in Greece with a Tax Free form. At Athens airport, where do I get the refund – before or after security?"
The answer: two steps
According to Athens International Airport's official page, there are two steps in two different places.
Step 1: customs stamp, before check-in
- The customs office is opposite check-in counter 61, in the public area.
- Go there before check-in and before dropping your bags.
- It only works after the check-in counters for your flight have opened.
- Bring the goods themselves, the receipts, the Tax Free forms and your passport.
Step 2: the money, after security
- The refund itself (Global Blue or Planet) is paid at ONExchange desks.
- They are on the Departures level, right after the security checkpoints, in both the Schengen and non-Schengen areas of the main terminal, and in the Satellite terminal.
- So you don't need to leave the secure area to get your money.
Flying via another EU country?
If your final destination is outside the EU but you leave Athens via another EU country, you can get the customs stamp only in the last EU country before you leave the EU.
A problem on the spot?
The Departures customs office operates 24 hours. Phone: +30 210 3532216.
