- Heavy storms caused massive flooding across the Lasithi Plateau in Crete.
- Large farming areas were submerged in mud, requiring agricultural machinery for access.
- A high-level government delegation led by the Infrastructure Minister is visiting the island.
If you are visiting or staying in Crete, stay alert to changing weather conditions. Check local forecasts, avoid driving through flooded rural roads, and follow instructions from local authorities before traveling outside major towns.
Massive Flooding on the Plateau
A severe storm system has left a trail of destruction across the Lasithi Plateau in Crete, causing massive floods after torrential rainfall. Large volumes of water inundated the area, turning vast agricultural fields into muddy lakes. Local producers are currently unable to reach their fields with standard vehicles, with access restricted strictly to agricultural machinery.
Local agricultural representatives noted that the sheer volume of water gave farmers no opportunity to react and protect their properties, leaving the region in a desperate situation.
Government Response and Next Steps
Following the severe weather, the Copernicus Emergency Management Service was activated to map the affected areas and assess the scope of the disaster.
To address the devastation and aid the victims, a high-ranking government delegation headed by Infrastructure Minister Christos Dimas is scheduled to visit Crete. A formal meeting involving regional authorities and local government representatives will take place to evaluate the situation, record the infrastructure damages, and coordinate immediate recovery efforts.
