Living Expenses Across Greece
According to the 2025 Household Budget Survey released by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT), an average household in Greece requires more than 1,800 euros per month to cover basic necessities. The data outlines average spending levels according to place of residence and records annual changes compared to previous periods.
Urban Versus Rural Spending
The survey highlights a clear distinction between urban and rural living costs. Households in rural areas spend an average of 1,386.11 euros per month, which is roughly 26.8% lower than the expenditure in urban areas, where households spend an average of 1,892.86 euros per month. This variance points to higher baseline costs associated with city living and urban infrastructure.
Regional Expenditure Breakdown
Geographically, the Attica region records the highest average monthly spending at 2,081.78 euros, approximately 14.4% above the national average. It is followed by the South Aegean at 1,997.11 euros, Central Macedonia at 1,779.95 euros, the Ionian Islands at 1,777 euros, and Crete closing the top five at 1,721 euros. Conversely, the lowest average monthly spending is observed in Sterea Ellada at 1,372.96 euros, sitting nearly 24.6% below the nationwide average.
Annual Percentage Changes
The research also examined annual shifts in household spending, with increases recorded across all regions without exception. Sterea Ellada registered the highest annual increase in average spending at 15.9%, despite remaining at the bottom of the absolute expenditure scale. Central Macedonia followed with a 12.9% increase, and the Ionian Islands saw a 12% rise. In contrast, the mildest increases were noted in Crete at 1.8%, West Macedonia at 2%, West Greece at 2.1%, and Attica at 2.5%.
