Heavy rains hit Siviri in Halkidiki
Central roads in the settlement of Siviri, located in the Halkidiki region, turned into rivers following intense rainfall. Large volumes of water rushed down from the mountain, flowing through two stream beds located within the basin of the area burned by wildfires this past summer.
Storms experienced over the weekend caused anxiety among residents and holiday home owners regarding the condition of local drainage systems in the wildfire-scarred landscape.
Flood prevention measures
Authorities noted that funding from a 3.5 million euro support package for Kassandra infrastructure rehabilitation has previously been allocated, with 2.5 million euros given to the municipality and 1 million euros to the regional unit of Halkidiki.
Meanwhile, the next phase of anti-flood protection is underway, focusing on the construction of branch barriers and log barriers. Relevant services remain on high alert to respond to any further severe weather events across the Kassandra peninsula.
