For property investors and Israelis holding real estate in Athens and across Greece, these figures highlight ongoing strong demand for holiday rentals. It is recommended to review local yields in popular areas such as Attica and ensure full compliance with current short-term rental regulations and tax rules.

Growth Outpacing the European Union Average

Greece's short-term rental market continues to report robust performance figures. Data released by Eurostat shows that guest nights in short-term rental accommodations booked through online platforms such as Airbnb, Booking.com, and Expedia increased by 8.3 percent year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026.

This growth rate outpaces the overall average recorded across the European Union, which stood at 5.3 percent for the same period. Between April and June, Greece recorded 14.57 million guest nights through the three platforms, compared with 13.46 million during the corresponding period last year.

Strong Standing Among Major EU Markets

Among the seven EU countries with the highest volumes of guest nights, Greece secured one of the strongest growth trajectories. Poland led this group with an 8.9 percent increase, followed closely by Greece at 8.3 percent and Italy at 8.1 percent. Other major markets like Germany, France, Portugal, and Spain recorded more modest increases.

Eurostat calculates guest nights by accounting for both the length of stay and the number of guests per booking, offering a comprehensive overview of activity in the tourism and rental sector.

Attica Leads Regional Figures

While nationwide figures cover the second quarter, regional Eurostat data is released with a three-month lag. During the first quarter of January to March, Attica recorded 1,689,292 guest nights, by far the highest volume among all Greek regions.

Central Macedonia followed with 518,787 guest nights, trailed by Crete with 251,758, the Peloponnese with 164,017, and the South Aegean with 114,838. Remaining regions registered considerably lower numbers of short-term rental bookings.
