Fire at a Recycling Facility in Thessaloniki

A large fire broke out at a recycling plant in the industrial area of Diavata, situated between the old national road, the Hellenic Petroleum facilities, and the Egnatia Motorway. Numerous firefighting vehicles are operating at the scene to contain the active blaze.

Heavy Smoke Covers the City

The thick smoke has spread across a large section of Thessaloniki, creating an oppressive atmosphere throughout the urban area. Extinguishing the fire is proving difficult due to the nature of the burning materials, which include large quantities of plastics and bulky items that feed the flames and require continuous water supplies and earth-moving support.

No Threat to Residential Areas

Authorities report that there are no homes or other businesses in the immediate vicinity of the fire's epicenter. Because the unit is located within an industrial zone with distance between facilities, the risk of the fire spreading further remains contained.
