What this defence cooperation development means for bilateral relations and naval capabilities.
The Hellenic Navy is preparing for a government-to-government lease of three Blue Whale autonomous unmanned underwater vehicles from Israel. According to defence reports published on Monday, Athens opted for a leasing arrangement due to limited budgetary resources, mirroring a previous model used for unmanned aerial systems. Developed by ELTA Systems, a subsidiary of Israel Aerospace Industries, the 10.9-metre vehicles are designed for intelligence gathering, surveillance, anti-submarine warfare, and mine countermeasures. Greek officials have not yet publicly confirmed the deal, and no timeline or contract value has been officially announced.
